Development Life Skills
Overview
Building the skills you need for the life you want.
Life skills are the foundation of independence. From managing money and cooking nutritious meals to communicating effectively and using technology with confidence, these are the abilities that open doors to work, relationships, and community participation.
Our Development Life Skills program provides one-on-one coaching tailored to your personal goals. We meet you at your current skill level and build from there -- using real-world practice, patient guidance, and a strengths-based approach that emphasises what you can do, not what you cannot.
Skill Areas
Six core areas of independence.
Our program covers the essential life skills that empower you to live confidently, make informed choices, and participate fully in your community.
Book a consultationBudgeting & finance
Learn to manage money effectively -- from creating weekly budgets and tracking expenses to saving for goals and understanding NDIS plan budgets. We use practical, real-world scenarios such as shopping trips, bill paying, and online banking that build lasting financial literacy skills. Our coaching helps you avoid debt, plan for future expenses, and make informed financial decisions that support your independence and long-term wellbeing.
Cooking & nutrition
Develop confidence in the kitchen with meal planning, grocery shopping, food safety, and cooking skills. We start with simple recipes and progress to full weekly meal preparation tailored to your tastes, dietary requirements, and cultural preferences. Learning to cook is a core independent living skill that improves nutrition, saves money compared to takeaway, and gives you greater control over your health and daily choices.
Planning & scheduling
Master the art of time management using calendars, to-do lists, and digital tools. We help you plan appointments, set reminders, and build daily and weekly routines that keep your life on track without overwhelm. Good scheduling skills reduce anxiety around forgotten commitments, improve your ability to balance work, study, and social activities, and are essential for successful independent living under any NDIS support arrangement.
Decision-making
Strengthen your ability to weigh options, consider consequences, and make choices that align with your values and goals. We use guided frameworks that build independence and self-trust over time, from everyday decisions like what to eat or wear to bigger life choices about housing, relationships, and healthcare. Confident decision-making is a Capacity Building skill that transfers across every area of NDIS plan goals and daily life.
Communication skills
Build confidence in expressing needs, asking questions, saying no, and advocating for yourself in conversations with family, friends, providers, and the wider community. Includes both verbal and digital communication across phone calls, email, text, and video calls. Strong communication is fundamental to self-advocacy, building relationships, accessing services, and achieving NDIS goals related to social participation and community engagement.
Digital literacy
Gain essential technology skills -- using smartphones, tablets, email, video calls, online banking, and myGov. We tailor sessions to your current skill level and help you stay connected in a digital world. Digital literacy is increasingly vital for accessing NDIS portals, telehealth appointments, online shopping, and staying in touch with friends and family, and our coaching builds confidence at whatever pace suits you.
Problem-solving
Develop creative and critical thinking skills to tackle everyday challenges with confidence. We use real-life scenarios to practice identifying problems, generating solutions, and making thoughtful decisions when things do not go as planned. Strong problem-solving skills reduce reliance on others for minor issues, build resilience, and are a core component of NDIS Capacity Building supports for greater independence.
Goal setting & planning
Learn to set meaningful short-term and long-term goals, break them into actionable steps, and track your progress. These skills translate directly to NDIS plan goals, employment, education pathways, and personal aspirations. Our structured approach helps you celebrate small wins along the way, stay motivated when challenges arise, and build a clear vision for the future you want to create.
Social skills
Build confidence in social settings -- starting conversations, reading social cues, understanding boundaries, and developing meaningful friendships. We practice in safe, supportive environments before branching out into community settings like cafes, social groups, and recreational activities. Strong social skills reduce isolation, improve mental health, and help you build the natural support networks that are essential for a full and connected life under the NDIS.
Our Approach
A proven framework for lasting growth.
We follow a structured yet flexible approach that respects your individuality while providing clear direction and measurable outcomes.
Personalised assessment
We start with a friendly conversation about your goals, strengths, and the areas you want to develop. No two assessments are the same because no two people are the same. We identify what matters most to you and build from there.
Hands-on skill building
Learning by doing is at the heart of our approach. Whether it is cooking a meal together, practising a bus route, or setting up a budget spreadsheet, we work side-by-side so skills become second nature through real practice.
Progress & independence
We gradually reduce support as your confidence grows, celebrating every milestone along the way. Our goal is to equip you with skills you can use independently, with us always available as a safety net when needed.
